Activities to Improve the
Learning Environment
Peacock Middle School School School Improvement Plan (SIP)

One of the goals of the Itasca Public School District 10 Board of Education and Peacock Jr. High School is to establish and maintain a communication network reflecting family, staff, community, and school board expectations. It is the belief of the staff of Peacock that the best way to do this is to create and implement a comprehensive communication system that keeps our school’s constituents informed and involved in school functions.

First, every parent desires information about his/her child and the immediate school environment in which they exist. At Peacock, the responsibility to facilitate this level of communication rests primarily with grade level teams. To accomplish this process, grade level teams:

  • Create for mailing monthly team newsletters detailing team and grade level activities and curricular focus;
  • Establish and implement a team process for timely communications that include:
    1. phone calls
    2. postcards
    3. e-mail and voicemail responses
    4. letters
  • Establish and implement the parameters for parent/teacher conferences following district and building guidelines;
  • Establish and communicate in timely fashion grade level policies and procedures;
  • Establish procedures for displaying student created work throughout the school.

Second, information that is building wide is disseminated through editions of the:

  • Monthly Principal’s Newsletter
  • Monthly Peacock Charger newspaper
  • Mailings from the office
  • Monthly Board of Education report
  • Quarterly Village Newsletter
  • Area newspapers

Third, a communication link to the community of Itasca is maintained by providing this constituency with opportunities for involvement. These opportunities include:

  • Curriculum nights and open houses
  • Orientation for incoming students and parents
  • Senior Citizen Luncheon
  • Parent/teacher conferences
  • Monthly Principal coffees
  • Student performances
  • Awards’ assemblies
  • Parenting classes
  • Community-based presenters and "teachers"
  • Volunteers
  • Community use of building facilities

Fourth, an annual Survey of Parent Opinions is mailed to all families in late spring to provide them with an opportunity for input into the state of Peacock. The survey assesses parents’ level of satisfaction with Peacock’s communication efforts, curriculum adequacy, leadership effectiveness, building safety and appearance, and level of service in key areas. The survey also asks respondents to rate our school by assigning a letter grade.
