Peacock Middle > Sixth Grade > Mr. Behrendt Classroom Discipline Policy A constant positive classroom atmosphere is a necessity for students to learn to the best of their abilities. That atmosphere requires that each person in the room gives encouragement to and shows respect for all others. The noise level can vary from silence in some situations to an excited clamor in others. Students who contribute to a positive atmosphere will be rewarded by the increased opportunity to learn and by the approval of classmates and the teacher. Any student who disrupts the learning atmosphere during a single class session or over a period of days will be subject to disciplinary measures. During a given class period, an individual who is disruptive will normally receive an initial warning- It may be either verbal or non-verbal, such as eye contact or a gesture or my moving in close proximity to the student. The second warning will be verbal. If the student persists in disrupting the class, a B.A.T. will be issued. A student who continues to misbehave after receiving a B.A.T. shows serious disrespect to his or her teacher and classmates and may receive a major detention. A student who persists with such behavior after receiving a major detention or who becomes dangerously disruptive may be removed from the classroom for the remainder of the period. Occasionally, a student's behavior consists of a single, more blatant incident which disrupts the learning process. In such cases outlined in the parent/student handbook, a B.A.T. or a major detention may be issued without warning. A student who is disruptive over a period of days is subject to disciplinary action as outlined above. In addition, other means of rectifying the misbehavior and restoring a positive learning atmosphere will be attempted. Such measures may include a private conference between the teacher and the student, changing of the student's seat, or deprivation of classroom privileges. When these interventions fail, a phone call to parents will be made, or a conference including student, parents, teacher, and possibly the administration will be held. It is my hope that these measures will help to provide all students with a learning atmosphere which is comfortable, open, challenging, and both physically and emotionally safe. |
