Franzen Intermediate > Principal > Dear Parents, As we have now started the second quarter and your student is bringing home nightly homework, I wanted to pass along a list of “helpful hints” in making homework completion a smooth process in your home. 1. Show an interest in your child's homework assignments. Ask about the subjects and the work to be done. 2. Be a role model -- take the opportunity to read a book or newspaper while your child studies. Reading together helps create a learning atmosphere. 3. Teach your child how to be organized. Be sure he or she has his/her homework assignment book and you look it over. Please sign it if your child’s teacher requests this. 4. Eliminate as many distractions as possible during study time. Answer the phone or return the call at a later time. 5. Develop a strategy for dealing with homework. Find a plan that works for your family and stick with it. 6. Try to relate the homework to your child's everyday life. For instance, fractions and measurements can be learned as the child prepares a favorite food. 7. Encourage your child to establish a regular time to do homework. Developing a schedule might help avoid procrastination. 8. Meet with your child's teacher to discuss the nature of the approach to reading, math, spelling and other topics that your child is being taught if you find that your child is consistently explaining things in ways that seem unfamiliar to you. 9. Make sure your child has a specific place to do homework that offers ample lighting, minimal noise and plenty of work space. Completing homework in front of the tv as you watch your favorite show makes it difficult for your child to focus and produce quality work. 10. Praise your child for successfully completing homework. Nothing builds self-esteem like praise from parents! Finally, if the homework time becomes a battle for your family, think carefully about how you are structuring that time. Most homework should be independent for your child, so if your child is really struggling with a concept that he/she is expected to complete, please write the teacher a note. This way our teachers can make sure they reinforce or explain the concept as necessary to garner a clearer understanding for your child. We want your evenings to be a positive time for you and your family! Respectfully, Mr. Murphy
