Franzen Intermediate > Fifth Grade
Daily Activities
A. D.O.A.- Daily Oral Activities- Children edit a grammatically incorrect sentence, solve an analogy, solve a math problem, and answer a social studies question each morning. This helps to start the day off to a great start.
B. Service Worker- This is an optional program for fifth grade that helps reinforce responsibility and good citizenship.
C. Grade level teachers meet weekly to share ideas and discuss curriculum.
All classes will cover the same topics. However, they may be covered at different times through a variety of activities.

Special Activities
A. Outdoor Education- Children take a three-day trip to Oregon, Illinois. Students use the outdoors to extend their learning beyond the classroom. OUTDOOR ED PICTURES
B. Robert Crown Health Center- Children view a Family Living film and then visit Robert Crown Health Center for a follow-up program.
C. Nature Center- Children take a half-day trip to Spring Brook Nature Center for an outdoor program dealing with the earth and conservation of materials.
D. D.A.R.E- Drug Abuse Resistance Education-This is a 9 week program offered by the Itasca Police Department. Students learn coping skills they can use in a variety of situations.
E. Tour of Itasca- This tour is arranged by the mayor and includes visits to the Itasca School District #10 Administration Building, The Village Hall, The Public Works, The Police Department, The Fire Department, and The Sewage Treatment Plant. This helps the students understand what it takes to run a community.

D. Media Center- Miss Wit- Children visit the Media Center to check out books and work on various curriculum projects.
E. Computer Lab- Children reinforce keyboarding skills and work on curricular projects.
Homework
A. Assignment Notebook-This should come home each night and be returned to school each day. Time is taken during the day to write down all assignments. This is done to teach and reinforce organizational skills.
B. Homework policy- Students should be expected to do an average of 50 minutes a night of homework. Homework is rarely given on the weekends unless it is a project that has been given over a period of time. Late homework will be sent home with a pink slip to be signed by the parent. In addition to completing written assignments, students may use the evening study time to review spelling words, study for tests, review math facts, or read for recreational reading.
