Fifth Grade expectations
Franzen Intermediate School

Students entering FIFTH GRADE are expected in the area of MATHEMATICS to:

 

Know the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts

Multiply 3 digit numbers by a 2 digit number

Divide 2 digit dividends by 1 digit divisor

Add and subtract 5 digit numbers

State whole number place value up to the millions place

 

 

Students entering FIFTH GRADE are expected in the area of LANGUAGE ARTS to:

 

Write 3 to 5 paragraph papers with introductory paragraph, body, and concluding paragraph

Recognize the 4 kinds of sentences (imperative, declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative)

Identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns

Use editing marks

Utilize an outline with topics & subtopics

 

 

Students entering FIFTH GRADE are expected in the area of READING to:

 

Distinguish between fact and opinion

Identify and distinguish between the types of literature (fiction and non-fiction)

Recognize the main idea of a story

Identify antonyms and synonyms

 

 

Students entering FIFTH GRADE are expected in the area of SOCIAL STUDIES to:

 

Identify the following maps symbols (capital, state, city, river, highway, body of water, land form)

Identify regional characteristics

Understand a compass rose with cardinal and intermediate directions

Recognize simple pie graphs and one topic bar graphs

Know basic geographic terms (coast, plain, peninsula, mountain, river, ocean, island, and gulf)

 

 

Students entering FIFTH GRADE are expected in the area of STUDY SKILLS to:

 

Use an assignment notebook

Read and comprehend a prepared outline

Use a dictionary properly (guide words, awareness that there are multiple meanings)

Understand the bold face and headings in a content area

Complete and turn in assignments on time

 

 

Students entering FIFTH GRADE are expected in the area of WRITING SKILLS to:

 

Write a complete thought using appropriate capitalization and punctuation

Write an introductory sentence and closing sentence for each paragraph

Indent each paragraph

Write a three to five paragraph narrative, persuasive, and expository essay
