Fourth Grade expectations

Students entering FOURTH GRADE are expected in the area of MATHEMATICS to:
  • Measure using customary units
  • Interpret graphs and data
  • Demonstrate mastery of multiplication facts through 10’s
  • Know basic concept of division
  • Apply math strategies to solve addition, subtraction, and multiplication word problems
  • Add and subtract three digit numbers
  • Subtract with middle zeros
  • Tell time to the minute
  • Count mixed money
  • Round to the nearest 10, 100, and dollar

Students entering FOURTH GRADE are expected in the area of LANGUAGE ARTS to:
  • Write and identify complete sentences
  • Indent paragraphs
  • Utilize phonetic rules presented in 3rd grade spelling curriculum
  • Edit written work
  • Use the writing styles of narrative, persuasive, and expository in writing a three to five   paragraph essay
  • Use time order words (yesterday, after lunch, during, before dinner, in April, etc.)
  • Identify nouns and verbs
  • Recognize common nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, possessive nouns, verbs, adjectives, and articles
  • Use cursive writing (Zaner-Bloser)

Students entering FOURTH GRADE are expected in the area of READING to: Have appreciation of reading for enjoyment
  • Use reference skills (glossary/dictionary/thesaurus, index, and table of contents)
  • Identify materials as fiction or non-fiction
  • Apply context clues to obtain comprehension of materials read
  • Apply reading skills to answer inferential, evaluative, and predictive questions
  • Use word analysis skills including root (base) words, prefixes, and suffixes
  • Know elements of a story (setting, plot, turning point)
  • Identify main idea of a story

Students entering FOURTH GRADE are expected in the area of SOCIAL STUDIES to: Locate our continent, our country, and our state
  • Recognize mapping skills (compass rose, cardinal and intermediate directions, grid map, map key, and symbols
  • Answer questions verbally and in complete written sentences after reading a social studies text
  • Recognize that there are communities in many countries
  • Recognize aspects of U.S. history (Native Americans, colonization, immigration, industrialization, U.S. Government and Washington D.C.)
  • Discriminate between country and continent

 

Students entering FOURTH GRADE are expected in the area of STUDY SKILLS to: 
  • Apply reference skills (glossary/dictionary/thesaurus, index, and table of contents)
  • Incorporate words from a question to formulate an answer in complete sentences
  • Use bold-faced words, headings, definitions, and captions in reading in the content areas
  • Interpret raw data, tables, and graphs
  • Answer different types of questions on a test (fill in the blank, multiple choice, true-false, short answer questions, essay)
  • Complete the day, and date on the assignment notebook
  • Write correct heading on papers

 

Students entering FOURTH GRADE are expected in the are of WRITING SKILLS to:

  • Answer content area question in written form
  • Extend writing by including descriptive words and phrases
  • Compose a three to five paragraph narrative, persuasive, and expository essay
  • Have experience with self-editing and peer editing of written work for capitalization, punctuation, grade-level spelling
