Third Grade Expectations

Students entering THIRD GRADE  are expected in the area of MATHEMATICS to:

 

Have strategies to compute basic addition and subtraction facts to 18

Count by 2s, 5, and 10s to 100

Can count coins to 99 cents

Tell time by 5 minute intervals

Measure in inches and centimeters

Recognize key terms that represent operations in word problems with teacher prompts

Identify simple geometric figures of plane and solid objects

Add and subtract whole numbers up to two digits, including trading, without using a calculator

Recognize coins and their values and count coins to 99 cents

 

 

Students entering THIRD GRADE  are expected in the area of LANGUAGE ARTS to:

 

Demonstrate spelling knowledge (at least the first 130 words of most frequently spelled words)

Use proper capitalization at the beginnings of sentences and correct ending punctuation

Have had an introduction to all upper and lower case cursive letters in Zaner Bloser penmanship

Identify nouns, action verbs, and adjectives

Complete a minimum of 15 words on the weekly spelling list and test

 

 

Students entering THIRD GRADE  are expected in the area of READING to:

 

Recognize and use word forms & word parts (-s, -es, -ing, -ed) and compound words that follow patterns

Differentiate between various forms of literature and understand the purpose of each

Generate questions, make predictions, give purpose for reading prior to, during, and after reading with teacher prompts

Use decoding strategies with unfamiliar words (phonics, context clues, etc.)

Use word analysis skills including root (base) words, prefixes, and suffixes

Be familiar with glossary/dictionary, index, and table of contents

Respond to open-ended comprehension questions in a complete thought (verbal) and sentence (written) with teacher prompts

Apply phonics shills

 

 

Students entering THIRD GRADE  are expected in the area of SOCIAL STUDIES to:

 

Understand the difference between and the importance of rules and laws in our community

Know that citizens can make a difference in our community

Know that they are citizens of Itasca or Wood Dale, Illinois, and the United States of America

Use mapping skills

Recognize landforms, oceans, and continents

Read for information from the 2nd grade social studies textbook and other sources

 

 

Students entering THIRD GRADE  are expected in the area of STUDY SKILLS to:

 

Be responsible for taking daily work and assignments from their mailboxes and taking them home in their home folders

Alphabetize to the 2nd and 3rd letter

Complete daily homework assignments

Read a calendar independently

Be familiar with data, tables, and graphs

Identify bold-faced words and definitions in reading

Identify and respond to different types of questions (fill in the blank, multiple choice, true false, skill questions, and short essay)

 

 

Students entering THIRD GRADE are expected in the area of WRITING SKILLS to:

Be familiar with district editing symbols: ex:        .   ?  sp

Write complete sentence beginning with an upper case letter and appropriate ending punctuationWrite one paragraph consisting of an opening sentence (indented), three detail sentences,    and a closing sentence
