Benson Primary > Speech/Language Services Resource Services Resource services are given to students who have an identified disability which interferes with learning. These disabling conditions include learning disabilities, other health impairments and emotional disorders. Learning may be affected in the areas of reading, math or written language or any combination of these areas may be affected. The resource teacher provides individualized instruction to meet the student’s needs as documented in the individualized educational plan (IEP). The resource teacher and classroom teacher work together to help the student achieve success with the accommodations that they need. These accommodations may include modifying the amount of work required of a student or giving the student extra time to complete a task. The resource teacher can administer classroom tests to students in order to give the student extra time or further explanation of directions. Local assessments are also administered to resource students with these accommodations. Students may leave their classroom for 30 minutes, usually three to five times a week to work in the resource room with the teacher. They are taught individually or in small groups. Sometimes the resource teacher will work on skills with a student within their classroom. Skills being taught in the classroom, along with skills stated directly on the student’s IEP goals are the emphasis for resource time. The resource teacher and the classroom teacher meet together with the parents at conference time to discuss the student’s progress, not only in the classroom, but also in the IEP goals. With the support of resource services, along with the classroom teacher who understands the student’s abilities and parents who reinforce learning activities, a student with disability can be a successful learner. |
