Benson Primary > First Grade > Project Prevent Reading: Project Prevent Description Project Prevent is an intensive tutorial program developed for use with first grade children who need extra reading support. In Project Prevent, a specially trained teacher works daily with each child for a one-half hour lesson, which includes both text reading and writing. Each child remains in the program until he/she is able to independently read grade level material. Dr. Darrell Morris developed this program, while at National-Louis University, Evanston, Illinois. Morris is responsible for extensive research in early literacy. He conceived a program that he felt was firmly grounded in current theory and research. He implemented the Project Prevent Program in Skokie in the fall of 1987. With the success of Project Prevent in Skokie, the program has been carried into other districts. Below is a list of districts that offer the Project Prevent Program: Skokie District # 68 Oak Park District # 97 Des Plaines District #62 • Downers Grove District # 58 • Medinah District #11 Lincolnwood District #74 Wilmette District #39 Northbrook District #27 Hickory Hills District #117 |
